HH2E awards €45m construction contract for Lubmin hydrogen plant

HH2E has awarded Gerbrüder Karstens a €45m ($50m) contract to jointly develop a green hydrogen production plant in Lubmin, Germany.

Under the contract, Karstens will lead all structural and civil engineering work for the plant, collaborating with regional partners to contribute to local economic development.

Construction of the Lubmin plant will begin following approval of the project under the German Federal Immission Control Act (BlmschG) and the final investment decision (FID) by HH2E shareholders.

H2 View understands the plant will have an initial capacity of 100MW and be scalable up to 1GW, the same as all hydrogen production projects HH2E plans to develop across Germany.

In total, the German energy supplier is aiming to establish at least 4GW of green hydrogen production capacity in Germany by 2030.

In February (2024), Siemens Energy agreed to support HH2E’s green hydrogen production units in Germany with its high-voltage systems and power transformers.

To reach its expected capacities, HH2E will combine electrolysers with high-capacity batteries, which can be achieved with the support of Siemens’ high-voltage products.

HH2E was scheduled to take FID on the Lubmin project last year (2023). JLEN and Foresight Group made a €9.2m ($10.1m) investment in the green hydrogen project in July 2023, to help it reach FID.
