Hexagon Purus lands €2.5m maritime order for hydrogen fuel system

Hexagon Purus Maritime has received a €2.5m ($2.7m) order for its compressed hydrogen fuel system from Freire Shipyard in Vigo, Spain.

The system will be used on Greenpeace’s new 75-metre vessel that features advanced green technologies, such as hydrogen and e-methanol power systems. The boat will also feature advanced power systems to enable the use of green hydrogen.

The hydrogen system, which is scheduled to be delivered in 2027, will be coupled with wind and solar power through over 2,000 square metres of sails, battery packs and solar panels.

Hexagon Purus Maritime’s Managing Director, Robert Haugen, claimed he was delighted to support Greenpeace’s hydrogen-powered vessel ambitions, showcasing “innovative solutions for reducing maritime emissions.”

Guillermo Freire, Managing Director of Freire Shipyard, said, “After a comprehensive tender process, we became confident that Hexagon Purus Maritime had the ability and highest technical capabilities to deliver on this exciting project.”

Last year (2023), Morten Holum, Hexagon Purus CEO, told H2 View the maritime industry is “a segment where compressed hydrogen can really play an important role.

He said, “The industry is still trying to figure out what sort of technology will work in the different use cases, and we are starting with our compressed technology, which we see as being important because it’s already readily available whereas some technologies are still being developed.

“If the industry is going to go zero-emission, from the middle of the decade there’s batteries and then there’s compressed hydrogen, while the others remained a little further behind.”
