Hexagon Purus brings hydrogen storage and distribution systems to Africa

Elemental Energy will distribute Hexagon Purus’ Type 4 cylinders, multi-element gas containers and distribution storage products throughout southern and east Africa.

The hydrogen infrastructure developer will make its products available for major African markets, with South Africa, Namibia and Kenya being key targets.

Elemental Energy aims to build hydrogen power systems that integrate with existing energy infrastructure to replace diesel generation and has already used Hexagon’s Type 4 cylinders as the core storage component of their multi-cylinder mobile storage trailers deployed in South Africa since 2023.

Michael Patterson, CEO of Elemental Energy, claimed the firm sees a huge potential for Africa, not just for the production of green hydrogen for export but also for local use.

“It’s critical that developing markets have equal access to new hydrogen technologies to enable the development and decarbonisation of their energy infrastructure,” he said.

“We could see African countries being early adapters of distributed green hydrogen technology in areas where traditional energy infrastructure is limited and where renewable resources are abundant.”

The companies see great potential in Namibia and South Africa in particular. Michael Kleschinkski, EVP of Hydrogen Mobility and Infrastructure at Hexagon Purus, stated the firm is proud to play a role in South Africa reducing its reliance on diesel generation.

“Diesel generators, widely used in the region, emit over 2.5kg of CO2 per litre of fuel consumed, significantly contributing to carbon emissions. Our Type 4 cylinders and multi-element gas containers offer a clean alternative, helping reduce emissions and enabling the region’s shift to green hydrogen.”

Earlier this month, the European Commission announced it would support the development of the South Africa and Namibian green hydrogen industry via three EU-funded programmes worth €53.9m ($59.7m).
