H3 Dynamics powers Qdot’s hydrogen drone with fuel cells

H3 Dynamics will work with Oxford’s Qdot Technology to develop a hydrogen-powered, long-range vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft.

The new VTOL is reportedly capable of travelling 600km or carrying 200kg for up to 250km to remote locations.

Toulouse-based H3 Dynamics provided its hydrogen-electric fuel cell system to ensure the aircraft meets qualification and validation by aviation authorities.

The Oxford University spin-off’s approach to thermal management covers various elements of the aircraft powertrain, giving a “unique advantage over traditional UAV developers and system integrators.”

H2 View understands that the UAV will offer an increased range and payload capacity over similar-sized aircraft and helicopters currently deployed for middle-mile aerial logistics, medical transport, and search and rescue.

Dr. Jack Nicholas, CEO of Qdot Technology, claimed, “Our hybrid powertrain strategy enables uncrewed aircraft to meet the necessary range and payload capacity, paving the way for new applications.

“H3 Dynamics’ fuel cell systems are now an integral part of Qdot’s hybrid powertrain.”

In 2023, H3 Dynamics announced it would use Hylium Industries’ liquid hydrogen storage in its hydrogen-electric drones.

Shifting to liquid hydrogen represented increased capabilities for UAVs due to cryogenic tanks storing three times more energy than compressed gas, according to Hylium.
