H-TEC electrolysers to power Finland’s 3MW hydrogen plant

Electrolyser supplier H-TEC Systems will deliver three ME450 PEM products to Helen Oy’s 3MW hydrogen production plant in Finland.

MAN Energy Solutions has agreed to lead the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the production plant. The two companies are set to operate under the same name from September 30, dubbed Quest One.

Located in the vicinity of Helsinki’s district heating network and the Vuosaari Harbour, Helen Oy’s plant is expected to use H-TEC’s electrolysers to produce up to 1,350kg of green hydrogen per day from green electricity generated via its renewables portfolio.

The hydrogen will be delivered to a nearby refuelling station via pipeline and distributed to industrial customers, or other refuelling stations using containers, whilst the waste heat will be utilised in Helen’s district heating network.

The Finnish energy supplier reached a final investment decision (FID) on the 3MW project back in April (2024) and is scheduled to begin operating it in 2026.

“Green hydrogen is undoubtedly the key element for a climate-neutral future and the global economy will require it in large quantities,” explained Alexander Stöckler, Head of Sales, Tendering & Project Management, Power Segment at MAN.

“It is therefore most important that energy suppliers like Helen Oy lead the way by building plants and gaining valuable operational experience with hydrogen technology.

“We urgently need industrial production plants to achieve economies of scale, reduce costs and meet the huge future demand for hydrogen both efficiently and economically.”

Robin von Plettenberg, CEO of H-TEC Systems, claimed that by combining the company’s electrolysis expertise with MAN’s plant engineering experience, the project will offer customers “a first-class package for the production of green hydrogen.”
