Ground broken on Australian 10MW green hydrogen blending project

Australian Gas Infrastructure Group (AGIG) has broken ground on its 10MW green hydrogen blending project on the border between Victoria and New South Wales (NSW).

The AUD $65m ($43m) Hydrogen Park Murray Valley project will boast a 10MW electrolyser from Chinese manufacturer LONGi Hydrogen to produce 500 tonnes of hydrogen per year for injection into Albury-Wodonga’s gas network.

Set to be blended into the gas networks in up to 10% volumes, the hydrogen will be supplied to around 40,000 homes and businesses.

Mars Petcare has also secured all of the renewable gas guarantees of origin certificates allocated to production at the project to support its food manufacturing.

Furthermore, AGIG has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with North-East Water to explore using recycled water from its wastewater treatment in the electrolysis, as well as supply surplus oxygen from hydrogen production.

“We’re creating circular economy synergies between our upgraded wastewater treatment plant and the new hydrogen facility, with the potential to supply biogas, enriched oxygen, and recycled water for a more sustainable future,” said North East Water Managing Director, Jo Murdoch.

Supported by Australian Renewable Energy Agency, Victorian Government and Clean Energy Finance Corporation funding, it comes as AGIG’s third hydrogen project, following on from its facilities in South Australia and Gladstone.

“Importantly, this project is demonstrating the potential for this industry to have greater flexibility in how they reduce their emissions, either by using blended gas delivered through the network or by purchasing renewable gas through a certification scheme,” said Acting AGIG CEO, Cathryn McArthur.

It comes as part of the gas network operator’s plans to deliver 100% renewable gas by no later than 2050, with at least 10% renewable gas blends delivered to homes and businesses by 2030.
