GreenWaste to trial hydrogen refuse truck supplied by Hyzon

GreenWaste will begin using a hydrogen fuel cell-powered refuse collections truck in North America supplied by Hyzon and New Way Trucks.

The trial will take place on selected routes throughout the Bay Area, including in the City of San Jose, County of Santa Clara and the towns of Atherton and Los Altos Hills.

Currently, the waste collection company’s fleet is powered by 100% renewable or alternative fuels. The vehicle is expected to support GreenWaste in reaching its 2030 goal to achieve a 45% reduction in total combined Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions from its 2022 baseline.

“Seven years ago, we made history by commercially operating the world’s first full-sized electric side-loading waste collection truck,” claimed Tracy Adams, CEO of GreenWaste.

“This pilot reinforces our ongoing commitment to zero-emission vehicles and recovering, recycling and reusing waste materials in the most innovative, environmentally responsible and reliable ways possible.”

Last year, Hyzon supplied a hydrogen-powered waste collection truck to the recycling and service company REMONDIS in Australia, which was developed domestically.

Yesterday (September 17), Hyzon announced it had begun series production of its Class 8 200kW hydrogen-powered truck in collaboration with North Carolina-based Fontaine Modification.

The vehicle will be manufactured at Hyzon’s Bolingbrook facility in Illinois, featuring Hyzon’s single stack 200kW fuel cell system, which is reported to be “25% more cost-efficient than using two 110kW systems combined.”
