GreenGo secures 100,000 hectares for scaled-down Mauritania hydrogen plant

GreenGo Energy has been granted access to 100,000 hectares of land to develop its large-scale Megaton Moon Green Hydrogen Project in Mauritania, having downsized plans by over 80%.

The Danish developer signed an agreement with the African nation’s energy and petroleum minister for the land near Nouakchott, where it now intends to build 13.1GW of wind and solar capacity to power 6GW of electrolysis.

However, it originally unveiled plans to build 60GW of renewables capacity and 35GW of electrolysis to produce 18 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of green ammonia.

The project will also adopt a phased approach, with 500MW of electrolysis and 1.2GW of combined wind and solar planned to be installed by the end of 2029 – producing 0.34 mtpa of green ammonia.

GreenGo said the approach will ensure “alignment with market demand and supply chain readiness between 2029 and 2033.”

The downsizing comes as various green hydrogen projects globally have faced major delays and even scrapping as high prices discourage demand for the molecule.

However, Minister of Energy and Petroleum Mohammed Khaled, said the land agreement showed the private sector’s “continued confidence” in Mauritanian green hydrogen developments “despite global uncertainties.”

With the land agreement now in place, the company will begin conducting detailed site and geotechnical surveys, meteorological data collection and feasibility studies.

“Our strategic location south of Nouakchott gives us a unique advantage,” said GreenGo Head of PtX, Anders Heine Jensen, who pointed to existing infrastructure and the potential to supply surplus clean water for farming and other industries.

“This project will bring tangible benefits to the entire region.”

The company plans to finance the project through a partnership model with “strategic and large-scale investors” with a “proven track record in the green energy sector.” GreenGo is yet to reveal any partners.

It comes as more international developers look to northern Africa as a potential green hydrogen production powerhouse for European industries, thanks to its abundance of land and renewables generation.

The likes of CWP Global, bp and more are all looking at developing projects in the country.
