Green Navy to use EODev’s newly certified fuel cell on hydrogen-powered catamaran

Green Navy’s concept vessel will be the first to use EODev’s REXH2 hydrogen fuel cell after it attained a Type Approval Certificate (TAC) from the Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore.

The system utilises a plug and play model that relies on Toyota’s advanced PEM fuel cell technology. The certification confirms that the REXH2 meets the “strictest safety and performance standards” in the maritime industry.

Looking ahead, Green Navy will now use the module for its PROMETEO project – Europe’s “first” electro-hydrogen-powered, 24-metre catamaran designed for the commercial transport of up to 200 passengers.

“The choice of REXH2 fuel cells is justified by the maturity of the equipment, its adaptation to the marine environment, and its operational safety,” explained Guy Saillard, Naval Architect and Green Navy Project Manager.

“The power range is perfectly suited for energy generation on a vessel of PROMETEO’s size and for continuously recharging battery packs,” he added.

“The batteries can deliver instant variable power to the propulsion system. The storage of hydrogen gas in pressurised bottles means that energy supplies can be adapted according to the vessel’s requirements and the operator’s needs.”

H2 View understands that Green Navy plans to complete the first safety review of the concept vessel by June 2026, before they order all the necessary hydrogen components for construction.

Last month (January), the Brittany Region granted a subsidy of €1.5m ($1.6m) to Green Navy as the project comes in alignment with the regional roadmap for renewable hydrogen development.
