Results of study to use green hydrogen to decarbonise 100% of heat used in malt production have revealed the energy carrier is a viable solution, according to UK-based Protium.
In 2022, Protium concluded a study with Bairds Malt – which produces 280,000 tonnes of malt per year for brewing and distilling industries – to switch the heating at one of its UK facilities to hydrogen.
Having now revealed the results of the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero backed study, Protium along with other H2Malt consortium partners have concluded that hydrogen is a viable fuel option to deliver a Net Zero heat solution using existing site assets and “modest changes” to existing equipment.
