Green hydrogen becoming ‘mainstream narrative’ in India

For the second day at India Energy Week 2025, Shri Hardeep Puri, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, talked up the country’s green hydrogen potential.

Reiterating comments he made at the opening ceremony yesterday, that the five million tonnes green hydrogen production target by 2030 is “very conservative”, he outlined the rapid growth in the industry since the National Hydrogen Mission was announced three years ago.

With hydrogen buses in operation at the event, Puri was asked when they would be rolled out at scale.

“I don’t know the timeline, but it will be faster than I can imagine,” he said. “Look at the last three years and you can we have gone from ideas to practical implementation.”

The Minister said the hydrogen buses are the result of a collaboration between IOCL and Tata Motors.

In June 2021, Tata Motors won a tender from IOCL to provide 15 FCEV buses to evaluate the potential of hydrogen-based PEM fuel-cell technology in India.

Built at a dedicated lab in Tata Motors’ R&D centre at Pune, the 12m-long buses are designed for easy ingress and egress with a low-floor design, can seat 35 passengers and were delivered after road tests and validations.

In line with policy and technical developments, Puri said green hydrogen was becoming “a mainstream narrative” in India.

“Our companies have signed green ammonia export contracts with Europe, the story is coming,” he said.

India has continued to advance its green hydrogen sector in Q4 2024 through numerous key tenders, bid submissions, investments and policy measures.
