Topsoe, Skovgaard Energy and Vestas have inaugurated a 5,000-tonne-per-year green ammonia plant in Denmark, aiming to demonstrate the potential of the hydrogen carrier.
Located in Ramme, the plant is expected to deploy a “first-of-its-kind” approach, where renewable power can be coupled directly to an ammonia plant while taking the fluctuations in power production into account. The developers say this will ensure a cost-effective process.
Receiving power from 50MW of new solar panels and 12MW of existing Vestas wind turbines, the project secured DKK 81m ($12m) in funding from the Danish Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Programme (EUDP).
“With this new facility, we are taking an important step, which will benefit both Denmark and the rest of the world,” claimed Kim Hedegaard, CEO Power-to-X at Topsoe.
