Gold-nickel alloy electrocatalysts can improve hydrogen production, say Japanese research

Japanese researchers have found gold (Au)-based electrocatalysts alloyed with nickel (Ni) in electrolysers can improve hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity.

A recent study by researchers from Chiba University, Japan, investigated the HER activity and surface properties of AuNi alloy prepared on single crystal Au surfaces, revealing atomic structural changes and surface sites responsible for enhanced HER activity of AuNi/Au catalysts during electrolysis.

Catalysts are used to lower the difference between the theoretical cell voltage and the voltage required to carry out hydrogen evolution, in essence, making the process more efficient.
