The hydrogen industry must “go big or go home” in ramping up mutli-gigawatt capacity by 2030 and providing enough renewable energy to replace fossil fuels and meet climate change targets.
Speaking at the H2 View London Summit at the London Science Museum, Matthew Knight, Head of Market and Government Affairs at Siemens Energy, said, “There are 100 million barrels of oil that gets burnt every day – that has to stop by the middle of the century, otherwise we have catastrophic outcomes for the whole world.”
“If hydrogen doesn’t take a significant bite out of the fossil fuel industry in the next few years, we have to get out of the way and let somebody else do it. So go big or go home.”
With the industry needing to grow by “four orders of magnitude”, he said we need to start delivering huge quantities of hydrogen in pipelines if we are to realise scale, to agreed timeframes. “So whenever you’re talking about the hydrogen economy, you need to check is that the economy this year, three years’ time or a decade’s time?”
