GKN Aerospace to develop 2MW liquid hydrogen aircraft propulsion system

UK-based GKN Aerospace has today (July 22) launched a £44m ($56.8m) project to develop a 2MW liquid hydrogen-electric propulsion system for larger aircraft.

The H2FlyGHT project, with the support of Parker Meggitt and the universities of Manchester and Nottingham, plans to demonstrate the 2MW system based on fuel cells, cryogenic power distribution and cryogenic drive systems.

GKN said the latest effort will build on work from the H2GEAR programme which is focused on developing liquid hydrogen systems for sub-regional aircraft of up to 19 passengers.
