South Korea’s GH EnA has agreed to use Utility’s H2Gen reactors to produce “carbon-negative” hydrogen using biogas.
Under a Commercial Agreement, the company wants to advance South Korea’s low-carbon hydrogen market, aligning with the nation’s Hydrogen Economy Roadmap.
H2 View understands that the H2Gen reactors, based on Utility’s eXERO gas production technology, can produce hydrogen directly from biogas without the need for electricity or steam methane reforming (SMR). It is reportedly a more cost-effective solution with a significantly smaller footprint compared to traditional processes.
The initial projects the two companies are set to deploy will be in Chuncheon, Taebaek, Hongcheon, Sokcho, Yangyang, Goseong and Inje.
GH EnA will take the lead on the projects and supply the produced hydrogen to heavy-duty vehicle applications for commercial transport, buses and passenger vehicles.
“With our H2Gen reactors, Korean companies are no longer tied to high cost, large footprint and low utilisation renewable energy sources to produce clean hydrogen, which is essential for South Korea’s hydrogen economy goals and energy independence,” explained Claus Nussgruber, CEO and President of Utility.
“Our technology enables customers to produce clean, affordable hydrogen on-site not only for the mobility sector but also steel, petrochemical and other hard-to-decarbonise industries, turning a compliance hurdle into a competitive advantage.”
Last May, the South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) launched a bidding market for up to 6,500GWh of electricity to be produced from clean-hydrogen-fired power generation over 15 years.

By 2027, the country plans to generate 3,000-3,500GWh of power annually from clean hydrogen, although it expects to rely heavily on export volumes of hydrogen to meet its demand
