Three Fraunhofer institutes have developed a direct solar water-splitting technology for hydrogen production, which is hoped to reduce system complexity and maintenance costs.
Under the Neo-PEC (photoelectrochemical cell) joint research projects, the German institutes said their “tandem PEC module” allows solar energy generation and hydrogen production to occur in one unit.
Produced by coating commercial float or plate glass with semi-conducting materials, the cell absorbs the short-wavelength light, while long-wavelength light passes through the upper level and is absorbed on the reverse side.
