German hydrogen refuelling station begins construction, with plans for future local production

Construction has begun on the Düsseldorf-Höherweg (HyLight3) project, a hydrogen filling station capable of providing two tonnes per day.

Being developed by H2 Mobility Germany, Stadtwerke Düsseldorf and transport operator Rheinbahn, the station will be capable of fueling up to 100 fuel cell-powered buses or trucks a day at 350 and 700 bar.

To support the project, Stadtwerke Düsseldorf will invest in an electrolyser to locally produce hydrogen from 2026 and deliver via pipeline to the station in Düsseldorf. Rheinbahm also has plans to purchase 20 fuel cell buses to convert its fleet to zero-emissions, with 10 already delivered.

H2 View understands HyLight3 will be funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) with €3m ($3.2m) as part of the National Innovation Programme Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Phase 2 (NIP2).
