Despite 2023 seeing maiden hydrogen-electric flights from ZeroAvia and Universal Hydrogen, the role of hydrogen in the aviation industry has been called back into question at the FT Live Hydrogen Summit in London.
Discussing a report that suggested hydrogen would make up a minimal percentage of flights in 2050, Clara Bowman, Chief Operations Officer at HIF Global, said the conservativeness of the aviation industry would see sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) more likely to play a key role in its decarbonisation than hydrogen.
“If we can get hydrogen and put it in an aircraft, then great,” Bowman said. “The aviation industry is an industry that’s extremely conservative, that means the rate of change is really slow and that is combined with the infrastructure challenges, the production issues around hydrogen.”
