France backs ArcelorMittal’s Dunkirk hydrogen steel plant plans with €850m

ArcelorMittal France will receive €850m ($946m) from the French Government to partially decarbonise its Dunkirk steel plant with hydrogen.

Approved by the European Commission, the support will see the plant, which currently operates three blast furnaces to produce liquid hot meta, introduce the direct reduction of iron (DRI) using hydrogen.

In 2023 alone, ArcelorMittal has had a combined €1.2bn ($1.33bn) of state support approved by the European Commission for the decarbonisation of its steel plants in Spain, Germany, Belgium and now France.
