The UK’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) has unveiled plans to develop a green energy hub at Chapelcross, encompassing hydrogen production and storage.
The NDA are seeking a strategic developer for the multi-million-pound project, who will bring expertise and private finance to deliver the site. The initiative has been backed with more than £15.3m from the Scottish and UK governments.
Chapelcross is a former 210-hectare nuclear plant near Annan and is one of the sites being safely and securely decommissioned by Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS), an NDA subsidiary. The plant stopped generating electricity in 2004 before its cooling towers were decommissioned not long after.
