Swiss energy company Alpiq and Swiss hydrogen company H2 Energy have revealed plans for Switzerland’s first commercial hydrogen production plant.
Located at the Gösgen hydropower plant, Alpiq and H2 Energy plan to use hydropower to produce hydrogen for use in commercial operations, namely heavy-duty hydrogen trucks from Hyundai Motor Company.
Hyundai and H2 Energy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in September 2018 to provide 1,600 heavy-duty fuel cell electric trucks and an adequate supply chain for renewable hydrogen over a five-year period beginning in 2019.
An application for a 2MW hydrogen production system, to be built on the left bank of the Aare Canal, was submitted at the beginning of July (2019) by Hydrospider, a joint venture company owned equally by Alpiq and H2 Energy. Construction is due to start at the end of the year.
