A report has said it is feasible to blend hydrogen with natural gas for use in an existing Wärtsilä engine following testing at a Michigan, US, power plant, achieving a 25% volume hydrogen blend.
Completed in October 2022 at WEC Energy Group’s 55MW AJ Mihm power plant in Michigan using a Wärtsilä 5SG engine, the three-day test saw the plant continuously supply power to the grind while running on a hydrogen blend.

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) also participated in the tests, leading an assessment of the engine’s performance, which it says confirmed the feasibility of blending hydrogen with natural gas for use in an existing Wärtsilä engine, after demonstration results showed “hydrogen can be safely and reliably handled and utilised in engine technology.”
