Exolum begins LOHC transport and storage project in the UK

Spain’s Exolum has begun testing the storage and transport of green hydrogen at a commercial scale on existing natural gas infrastructure in the UK.

Located at the Port of Immingham, the pilot project has been supported by the UK government with £505,000 ($647,000). It will use liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) to transport and store the fuel in liquid form.

H2 View understands that 400 metres of LOHC containing 20 tonnes of hydrogen will be transported through a 1.5km pipeline. The use of LOHC is expected to overcome current challenges in the hydrogen supply chain.

In addition to government support, the Spanish oil firm has also received backing from its part owner CVC and stakeholders including Macquarie, OMERS and Credit Agricole.

In March, Exolum secured the bulk of its funding for the demonstration project, with the aim of completing the project before the end of the year.

Felix Gomez, Technology and Innovation Lead at Exolum said the pilot will “highlight the potential of using existing energy infrastructure for new energy carriers.”
