Later this week, I will be speaking on a H2 View webinar on the subject of “Hydrogen: Project Perception Change”, and as I see it, there are a few specific developments that must happen in order to meet the promise of a hydrogen future.
First up, the green energy industry has to step up to support a hydrogen future and embrace hydrogen fuel cells as a serious energy alternative. At this moment in the US, California is the only state offering significant incentives. Creating a federal program would put nationwide power behind green energy alternatives, including hydrogen.
This past summer the US Department of Energy (DOE) announced its “Hydrogen Shot,” to surprisingly little fanfare. It is the first of the DOE’s Earthshot initiatives that will essentially guarantee breakthroughs of more abundant, affordable, and reliable clean energy solutions within the decade. The Hydrogen Shot specifically seeks to reduce the cost of clean hydrogen by 80% to $1/kg in one decade.
