As the potential for hydrogen powering major transport in the years ahead becomes more apparent, the sector has seen widening developments in heavy-duty on-road vehicles that seem set to spearhead the market. One key route for those developments has been retrofitting existing truck chassis with hydrogen-powertrains, which many believe can streamline the process.
However, in the UK, one company is taking a more from-the-ground-up approach. Founded in Glasgow, Scotland in 2017, Hydrogen Vehicle Systems (HVS), has set out on a path which it hopes will see it deliver the ‘first’ hydrogen-electric heavy goods vehicle (HGV) designed from the ground up in the UK to market.
With two vehicles currently in development, a medium-commercial vehicle (MCV), and the flagship HGV, since 2020 HVS has seen an unprecedented acceleration of investment, development, and business growth, having received a combined backing of £30m ($34.4m) from global retailer, EG Group.
