EWE to explore underground 100% hydrogen storage

EWE and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) are set to test the storage of 100% pure hydrogen in underground salt caverns in a €10m ($11.9m) project called HyCAVmobil.

Announcing the news today (9th April), EWE said the construction of a hydrogen test cavern in Rüdersdorf, Brandenburg, has reached its first milestone: the company has successfully installed and cemented 160 steel pipes down to a depth of 1,000 metres.

With access to hydrogen that has been massed stored underground, EWE said it will be able to cater to the demands of hydrogen refuelling in the long term with hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles becoming more prominent in Europe.
