EWE commissions Drees & Sommer to manage 320MW hydrogen plant

EWE has chosen consulting company Drees & Sommer SE to manage its large-scale green hydrogen project in Germany which is expected to produce 26,000 tonnes of the fuel per year.

The 320MW plant, located in Emden, is anticipated to be one of Europe’s largest hydrogen production plants and serve various industrial applications in the region. The plant is scheduled to be built in 2027.

Stuttgart-based Drees & Sommer has been commissioned to handle project steering, approval procedures and engineering management. The company also supervised the tendering and award of the electrolyser contract for Siemens Energy.

In addition to the production plant, EWE is planning to implement a 50MW electrolyser in Bremen, which will also be a part of the Clean Hydrogen Coastline (CHC) – EWE’s overall hydrogen project. The firm expects the two projects to make “an active contribution to avoiding grid bottlenecks, so they are a key pillar in the energy transition.”

The CHC has received a total investment of over €800m since its inception. EWE is also exploring the repurposing of a gas cavern in Huntorf for hydrogen storage and the construction and conversion of several pipeline sections.

Alexander Stubinitzky, Head of Hydrogen & SynFuels at Drees & Sommer, claimed the project is very “complex,” however. He said, “All trades have to be scaled up, and there are many interfaces that have to be cleanly organised during implementation.

“The project is extremely demanding in technical terms and with regard to organisation and scheduling of time. The company brings project management experience from successfully implementing many complex large-scale projects, coupled with technical expertise in hydrogen production.”
