Evonik inks term-sheet for 50MW electrolyser to supply hydrogen peroxide plant

German chemicals firm Evonik has signed a term sheet with VoltH2 to build a 50MW electrolyser to supply its Delfzijl chemical park in the Netherlands with green hydrogen.

The new electrolyser unit is planned to supply Evonik’s hydrogen peroxide plant from 2027 to partially displace fossil-based hydrogen currently used in its processes.

Hydrogen peroxide is widely used as a bleaching agent, disinfectant and oxidising agent.

It is primarily produced by reacting hydrogen with anthraquinone to form anthrahydroquinone, which is then oxidised with air to generate hydrogen peroxide before being extracted and purified.

Evonik Peroxide Netherlands Managing Director, Peter Metten, explained that the chemicals major wants to switch its production process to entirely renewable resources.

“Producing hydrogen peroxide requires three critical resources: electricity, steam and hydrogen,” he said. “Finding sustainable solutions for the first two is more straightforward. Sourcing green hydrogen is the tricky part.”

Currently working on developing six Dutch green hydrogen plants, project developer VoltH2 said the Delfzijl development would prove important for future projects.

Founder and Managing Director, André Jurres, said, “Thanks to this systems-integrated approach, large industrial companies like Evonik are demonstrating how to optimise the use of sustainable electricity and its natural allies, such as green hydrogen production.

“The long-term commitment of Evonik and VoltH2 shows the feasibility of achieving significant carbon emission reductions on a large scale in the coming years.”

Get up to speed on hydrogen with Class of H2

At a time when hydrogen is the new gold rush for so many investors and start-ups alike, and the skills gap risks becoming the skills gulf, H2 View’s Class of H2 presents a series of hydrogen training modules.

Our first masterclass is created to bring your hydrogen fundamentals up-to-speed, covering the basics, e-fuels and ammonia, low-carbon and green hydrogen production, turquoise hydrogen production, biomass pathways, and underground hydrogen storage.
