“When we are looking at a renewable future, hydrogen is the key.” These are the words of Jukka Lehtonen, Vice-President of Technology and Product Management of Energy Business at Wärtsilä Energy.
With the group’s primary focus on marine propulsion, it seemed inevitable that Wärtsilä would start developing clean hydrogen variants. This development into hydrogen stems from a pioneering test programme for pure hydrogen engines with the hope that it can enable fully decarbonised energy systems.
The project will see the testing of thermal balancing engines to use pure hydrogen with the expectation that the engine and power plant concept will be capable of running on 100% hydrogen by 2025.
