European copper producer launches investigation as metal inventory goes missing

European copper producer Aurubis is investigating suspected criminal activities after revealing that hundreds-of-millions-of-euros worth of metals were missing from its inventories.

Aurubis, which plans to convert its Hamburg, Germany, copper anode plant to run on hydrogen, said during a review of its inventories it identified “considerable discrepancies” in its target inventory.

Based on the evidence, Aurubis has concluded that it has been the target of “further criminal activity” following cases reported in June (2023).
