European Commission awards €250m to hydrogen infrastructure projects

The European Commission will back 41 cross-border energy infrastructure projects with up to €1.25bn ($1.3bn) in grants, including over €250m for 21 hydrogen development studies.

The EU has stated the funding will “help alleviate investment risks associated with this nascent market” and “complement hydrogen policy framework.”

Studies being carried out for the Spanish Hydrogen Backbone have been supported with up to €32.5m ($33.8m), whilst Nordic Hydrogen Route Feasibility and Design studies and BarMar-H2Med Hydrogen Interconnector studies both secured more than €28m ($29m).

Furthermore, studies for Italy’s national hydrogen pipeline and the EmilHY France-Germany hydrogen power plant conversion project each secured over €20m ($21m) in funding.

The initiatives selected by the EU have all been granted the status of Important Projects of Common Interest (IPCEI) and Projects of Mutual Interest (PMI).

The funding announcement follows the 2024 call for the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) funding, with the formal adoption of the award decision expected in the coming weeks.

The next CEF energy call for proposals is planned for later this year (2025). Dan Jørgensen, European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, highlighted that it’s the first time hydrogen and offshore electricity grid projects have been selected.

“Once completed, the successful projects will boost our efforts to decarbonise our economies and societies, integrating our energy markets and safeguarding our industry’s competitiveness,” Jørgensen added.

Last April, the EU awarded €424m ($450m) in funding to energy infrastructure projects. As part of this funding package, five hydrogen refuelling stations in Poland secured up to €29m.
