EU leaders have called for emphasis to be given to hydrogen from renewable sources, as Europe takes steps to create a hydrogen market and meet its decarbonisation targets.
The European Council, made up of the heads of state or governments of all EU countries and the European Commission President, on Friday (11th Dec) adopted Council Conclusions “Towards a hydrogen market for Europe”, which gives political guidance to the implementation of the EU Hydrogen Strategy presented in July.
In its conclusions, the EU Council recognises the important role that hydrogen, especially from renewable sources, plays in reaching the EU’s decarbonisation objectives, economic recovery in the context of Covid-19 and the EU’s competitiveness on the global scene.
But in order for this to happen, the Council says the EU market for hydrogen needs to be significantly scaled up and become a competitive, liquid market that attracts investments.
