EU grants South Africa €32m for green hydrogen development

The EU has awarded South Africa two grants worth €32m ($35m) to advance the country’s green hydrogen plans.

The first grant is expected to support South African logistics company Transnet with infrastructure costs and railway, port and pipeline developments.

The second, worth $27.6m, will advance South Africa advance its green hydrogen value chain, which has been earmarked as a critical fuel to enable decarbonisation in the country.

Via the grants, South Africa can take advantage of its abundant wind and solar resources to produce green hydrogen.

European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson claimed the grants will be implemented to allow South Africa to achieve its decarbonisation objectives.

Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, South Africa’s Minister of Energy and Electricity, added, “We think that green hydrogen provides some of the best opportunities for the country to really industrialise.”

Last week (September 6), the European Commission announced it would support South African and Namibian green hydrogen investment funds with up to €50m ($55m), as part of a wider funding round for Namibia.

In April (2024), a consortium led by DNV and Natural Gas secured a UK government grant to undertake a feasibility study designed to accelerate green hydrogen production and export in South Africa.
