EU ETS has improved the business case for Air Products’ Rotterdam blue hydrogen plans

The EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) has improved the business case for plans to convert an existing grey hydrogen plant to blue hydrogen, Air Products has told H2 View.

Following the news that the industrial gas major would equip its HyCO4 plant in Rotterdam with CO2 capture technology in November 2023, Mark van Wijk, Director of Large Projects Business Development at Air Products explained rising ETS prices have become a “very effective motivator.”

Expected to come online in 2026, the soon-to-be abated hydrogen would then be sold to ExxonMobil for use in its Rotterdam refinery, as well as other customers in industry and mobility, via Air Products’ hydrogen pipeline network.
