EU CO2 reduction agreement reached for heavy-duty vehicles

The CO2 emissions from the EU road transport sector are planned to be cut by 90% by 2040 under a new agreement by the European Parliament and Council.

Hoped by the Commission to send a “clear signal” to OEMs, transport operators and users to “steer investments towards innovative zero-emissions technologies,” the agreement comes as many heavy-duty hydrogen vehicle players look to accelerate their European rollout.

Brokered on Thursday (January 18), the provisional agreement maintains targets set by the European Commission’s proposal for a 45% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030, 65% by 2035 and 90% by 2040.
