Eternal Power unveils €2.3bn offtake deal for German hydrogen facility

Eternal Power will develop a hydrogen production facility in Germany and has already secured an offtake agreement, according to reports.

Located in Dummerstorf, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the plant, which will become operational in 2028, is expected to produce 8,000 tonnes of hydrogen per year. Eternal Power has stated it could expand from an 80MW electrolyser to 400MW in the future.

The company also secured initial commitments from undisclosed customers and signed a preliminary offtake agreement worth €2.3bn ($2.4bn).

The electrolyser will become operational in late 2028, to coincide with the near completion of the hydrogen core network. H2 View understands that the next phase of expansion is already in preliminary planning, with the additional 320MW anticipated for 2030.

Whilst the land is secured and customers are waiting, Eternal Power will also require an expansion for the extra-high voltage grid, which is already in planning by grid operator 50Hertz.

Additionally, the Hamburg-based firm has developed its own software solution to help identify the ideal combination and sizing of different renewable energy sources. This technology is reported to optimise power procurement on an hourly basis for 20 years, ensuring high plant utilisation while keeping electricity costs low.

Eternal Power’s Co-Founder and Chief Operation Officer (COO), Robert Meitz, claimed green hydrogen can be competitively produced in Dummerstorf.

“Few other locations cover all the important requirements in close proximity: offshore wind farms, connections to high and extra-high voltage networks, industrial sites, the hydrogen core network, and water,” he said.

Andreas Rimkus, Hydrogen Commissioner for the SPD parliamentary group, added, “We need green hydrogen in Germany to sustainably promote energy-intensive industries such as shipping, aviation, the chemical and steel sectors.”

“Domestic production offers us the opportunity to support both the energy market and industry simultaneously. In this context, young companies like Eternal Power are crucial.”
