Equinor today unveiled plans to build a plant in the UK that produces hydrogen from natural gas in combination with carbon capture and storage (CCS) – which the Norweigan oil firm says will be the largest of its kind in the world.
To be located at Saltend Chemicals Park near the city of Hull, the plant aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 900,000 tonnes per year and will be built as part of the Hydrogen to Humber Saltend (H2H Saltend) project.
The project initial phase comprises a 600MW auto thermal reformer (ATR) with carbon capture to convert natural gas to hydrogen.
It will enable industrial customers in the Park to fully switch over to hydrogen, and the power plant in the Park to move to a 30% hydrogen to natural gas blend.
