Enertrag to auction 500 tonnes of green hydrogen from German electrolyser

Enertrag has launched an auction to offtake 500 tonnes of green hydrogen produced at its electrolyser plant currently under construction in Germany.

Located in Osterweddingen, near Magdeburg in Eastern Germany, the 10MW electrolyser plant is expected to begin operations before the end of 2025, producing around 900 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.

Enertrag has stated, “Of the planned annual production, 500 tonnes will be auctioned off in advance during E-World 2025,” taking place February 11-13.

The company’s online statement added, “With 500 tonnes of hydrogen, it is possible to produce around 5,000 tonnes of green steel, provide the fuel for hydrogen buses or trucks to cover around five million kilometres, or produce 2,500 tonnes of green methanol.”

Thomas Barkmann, Head of Hydrogen Sales at Enertrag, said the auction sends “a clear signal for the beginning of a new era in energy supply.”

The Osterweddingen electrolyser will be powered by Enertrag’s renewable energy portfolio, and the facility will eventually be connected to the German hydrogen core network.

Additionally, the German firm is planning to develop hydrogen plants at “numerous other locations” along the core network. Specifically, two new facilities will be builtin Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with a total electrolysis capacity of 185MW.

Enertrag’s other developments include its joint venture with Nicholas Holdings Limited, Hyphen. The initiative, based in Namibia, will reportedly produce two million tonnes of green ammonia annually, and it was recognised as a “strategic foreign project” by the German Government last year.
