Element Fuels completes site preparation for hydrogen-powered refinery

Element Fuels Holdings has completed site preparation and pre-construction of a hydrogen-powered refinery and combined-cycle power plant.

Located in the Port of Brownsville, Texas, the facility is expected to become operational in 2027 and be capable of producing enough low-carbon hydrogen to supply 100% of the refinery’s fuel requirements.

Excess hydrogen produced will be used to generate low-carbon electricity from Element’s hydrogen-capable combined-cycle power plant. In addition, over 100MW of excess electricity generated will be made available to the Energy Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT).

The company’s Co-CEO and Founder, John Calce, explained, “Element Fuels has received the necessary permitting to construct and operate a refinery capable of producing in excess of 160,000 barrels, or approximately 6.7 million gallons per day of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel.”

He added that the company is not only “ushering in the next generation of clean fuels,” they’re also proving “there is a way to produce higher quality, cleaner, higher-octane fuels that significantly advance the energy transition.”

Element Fuel has contracted with McDermott to provide front-end engineering design (FEED) services for the facility, including offsites and utilities.

McDermott’s Rob Shaul, Senior Vice-President for Low-Carbon Solutions, said the company remains “focused on the delivery of low-carbon pathway projects and are committed to advancing the landscape of energy production.”
