EKFB extends the use of GeoPura HPUs at HS2 construction sites

EKFB has agreed to deploy GeoPura’s green hydrogen-powered generators (HPUs) at two of its HS2 sites in Aylesbury, UK.

Following a successful initial trial, the HPUs will now cover the entire project duration and replace the diesel generators used on-site to reduce NOx, CO2 and particulate matter.

EFKB, the Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial Construction and BAM Nuttal joint venture (JV), has been contracted to deliver 80km of the High Speed Two (HS2) Phase 1 route between the Chilterns and south Warwickshire.

GeoPura’s HPUs have been strategically located at the ‘Footpath SMA9 Accommodation Overbridge Compound’ and the ‘Thame Valley Viaduct’ sites. These locations represent rural settings where grid connections can’t deliver.

Equipped with fuel cell technology, the generators convert hydrogen gas into electricity, emitting only water vapour. H2 View understands the systems have already saved over 189 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.

“This is an excellent example of how EKFB, through the construction of HS2, is driving the adoption of alternative fuel innovations to meet our diesel-free ambition by 2029,” explained Andrea Davidson, HS2 Head of Carbon and Climate Change.

Andrew Cunningham, CEO of GeoPura, said, “The extension of our contract underlines how clean power can become ‘business as usual.’

“Historically, the industry has proactively removed many threats to human health from their working environment – GeoPura are delighted to be helping EKFB and HS2 eliminate diesel use on all their sites leaving a sustainable legacy for one of the UK’s most significant infrastructure projects.”

EKFB’s Carbon Manager, Alan Silverster, added that GeoPura’s HPUs have been “an excellent and reliable source of zero emissions power from the outset.”
