E.ON selects Andritz to study 20MW Essen green hydrogen plant

E.ON Hydrogen has selected Andritz to carry out an engineering study on its 20MW green hydrogen plant in Essen, Germany.

Planned for Essen’s city harbour, the HydroHarbourEssen (HHE) project is expected to supply electrolytic hydrogen for transport and other industry applications within the harbour’s vicinity.

The firm plans to build a public heavy-duty hydrogen refuelling station just 300 metres from the plant.

Using renewable energy to power the 20MW electrolyser installation to produce 2,300 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, E.ON says the plant will comply with the EU’s renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RNFBO) rules.

Furthermore, waste heat from the plant could be fed into the local district heating network run by Iqony Fernwärme.

Andritz will now carry out feasibility and safety studies for the complete plant – encompassing hydrogen production, compression, storage and trailer loading bays.

With the studies expected to be completed in 2024, E.ON hopes to start hydrogen production in 2027.

“We are honoured to E.ON Hydrogen has chosen us as a partner and are eager to contribute to this important decarbonisation project,” said Peter Eisenköck, Vice-President Green Hydrogen at Andritz.

“We are committed to taking the lead in all aspects of project execution to ensure efficient implementation and support at every stage.”

The German industrial firm has a solid partnership with Norwegian alkaline electrolyser original equipment manufacturer (OEM) HydrogenPro and is currently building a 100MW HydrogenPro electrolyser plant for steelmaker Salzgitter.
