The Dutch Government has today (March 20) revealed intentions to establish large-scale offshore hydrogen production by 2031.
Utilising wind farms to the north of the Wadden Islands wind energy area, the Government hopes to establish approximately 500MW of electrolysis capacity, with plans for the site to be operational by around 2031.
The area was selected due to an already planned wind farm for the production of electricity and an existing natural gas pipeline, which under the plans could be reused for transporting hydrogen to land before being connected to an onshore hydrogen network.
As a precursor to the large-scale plans, the Government has said work is underway on a smaller pilot project with capacity for 50-100MW of electrolysis, paving the way for the 500MW project.
