Düsseldorf hydrogen refuelling station to employ ‘unmatched’ compressor tech

H2 Mobility’s Düsseldorf-Hoerwig hydrogen refuelling station will employ a new, compact compressor system in a bid to make it Europe’s “most powerful.”

Having started construction in March with plans to offer two tonnes of hydrogen per day, H2 Mobility has said the new compressor, developed by Hoerbiger and Ariel, will boost dispensing capacity to over five tonnes per day.

The HCP 500 compressor package is said to be more compact and powerful to deliver a mass flow rate of over 250kg per hour.

Slated to offer an “unmatched” total cost of ownership (TCO), the compressor package is being adopted by H2Mobility for its new heavy-duty refuelling concept, which will be combined with modular dispensers to provide hydrogen at 350-500 bar.

“The performance of the Düsseldorf refuelling station on Höherweg is currently unmatched in Europe,” claimed H2Mobility Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer (COO), Frank Fronzke.

“It represents the new generation of H2 Mobility refuelling stations. In Düsseldorf, multiple 350 and 700 bar vehicle types will be able to refuel simultaneously and consecutively at the same location.”

With over 80 stations operating in Germany and Austria, H2 Mobility is looking to widen its offering for heavy-duty vehicles. Currently, 33 stations in its network offer 350 bar refuelling, with plans to see that number increase to over 50 by the end of 2024.

At present, green hydrogen makes up a minimal percentage of the hydrogen dispensed from its stations. With goals to provide entirely green across the network in 2028, H2 Mobility signed a five-year offtake agreement with Lhyfe for 1,200 tonnes of green hydrogen.
