Hydrogen will only supply 5% of global energy demand in 2050, a third of the level required to meet Net Zero, a report by independent energy expert, DNV has predicted.
In its Energy Transition Outlook 2022 report, DNV said that despite the energy carrier being essential for decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors, such as high heat processes in manufacturing and maritime, hydrogen is ‘inefficient and expensive’ compared to direct electrification.
The report found that despite seeing hydrogen scale in the manufacturing sector in the early 2030s, with use of hydrogen derivatives such as ammonia and e-methanol expected to rise in the late 2030, DNV predict that hydrogen will only supply 5% of global energy demand in 2050, a third of the level needed in a Net Zero energy mix.
