DNV approves Alfa Laval’s hydrogen GCU for marine vessels

Alfa Laval has secured an Approval in Principle (AiP) from DNV for its Gas Combustion Unit (GCU) boil-off technology concept designed for liquid hydrogen carriers.

The GCU will play a critical role in managing tank pressure and temperature for liquid hydrogen carriers, ensuring the safe combustion of boil-off gas from the vessel’s storage tank.

Through the AiP, Alfa Laval has confirmed the technical feasibility and safety mechanism of the GCU design and concept, which is based on its existing liquefied natural gas (LNG) technology.

The Swedish company will now be able to develop a GCU prototype that will undergo further testing and type approval shortly.

Alfa Laval’s Business Development Manager, David Jung claimed the approval validates the firm’s concept and “adheres to established technical and safety standards.”

Jung added, “For the industry to confidently transport hydrogen, ensuring the safety and reliability of enabling technologies is paramount. Alfa Laval’s proven experience in gas combustion technology for LNG carriers positions us well for GCU technology once the hydrogen transportation market takes off.”

Compared to LNG, hydrogen presents different challenges for safe transportation at sea, triggered by its low boiling point of -253°C which leads to an increased boil-off rate during transportation.

Last November (2023), Alfa Laval announced plans for a new electrolyser and fuel cell technologies business unit, along with an innovation centre dedicated to these solutions.
