CWP Global has joined Angolan and German players to develop a 600MW green hydrogen project in Angola.
Expected to be the first of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa, the project – currently under development by Angola’s state-owned oil and gas company, Sonangol, in partnership with German engineering firms Conjuncta and Gauff – is set to produce green ammonia.
Phase one of the development is expected to reach 400,000 tonnes of green ammonia production per year, with capacity increased in subsequent phases.
The partners intend on using existing power generation, port and grid infrastructure, as well as available land for downstream facilities.
It appears the focus of the project will be to export the green ammonia product.
Mike Scholey, CWP’s CEO for Hydrogen, said, “We plan to supply vital green hydrogen and ammonia to the world, helping to meet critical gateways for industrial decarbonisation strategies and targets in Europe and elsewhere.”
Like many African nations, Angola has increasingly been looking at green hydrogen as a way to improve its own energy security, and economic prosperity through exports.
“This agreement aims to reinforce the necessary partnership to allow the conclusion of one of the largest green hydrogen and ammonia synthesis plants in Sub-Saharan Africa,” said Dr. Vladimir Machado, Sonangol’s R&D CEO.
“This project will also allow Sonangol to take a leadership position within the energy transition, business portfolio diversification, social and economical development and the national productive sector.”
With CWP joining the development, Conjuncta CEO, Prof. Dr. Stefan Liebing, is hopeful it will support the project’s path to final investment decision (FID).
He stressed, “As Angola offers a special framework and very good options for production of green hydrogen, we believe we have one of the most attractive projects that has a high likelihood of early implementation.
“Following successful completion of first phases of development, we are confident that with the experience of CWP Global, Angola can take a leading role in Africa in developing a new global green hydrogen industry.”
Gauff Engineering Managing Director, Stefan Tavares Bollow, added, “With all partners on board, we now look forward to establishing the special purpose vehicle (SPV), and continuing with the development of the front-end engineering design (FEED), having the target to implement the first large scale green ammonia project in the African market.”
