Hydrogen’s near-term greenhouse effect has been masked by current assessment models, according to a new report by the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF).
The study published today (February 21) in the Environmental Science & Technologyjournal found standard frameworks to assess the climate impacts of hydrogen are “vulnerable to broad miscalculation.”
Having reanalysed a previous lifecycle assessment of hydrogen, the study showed that the “most widely used” frameworks fail to include critical factors including the warming effect of hydrogen emissions; measured real-world methane intensities; and the near-term warming impact of emissions.
