COP29 Presidency calls for stakeholders to endorse Hydrogen Declaration

The COP29 Presidency has today (October 21) called on industry and government stakeholders to endorse the final text of its Hydrogen Declaration.

Offering an opportunity for stakeholders to declare their commitments to working towards the scale-up of clean hydrogen, the declaration does not come as part of COP’s official negotiations.

Instead, they “aim to catalyse action and ambition across all sectors of society,” according to the Presidency.

The Hydrogen Declaration sets out eight points to reach its overarching goal including demand stimulation, the development of global standards, advancing global trade and more.

Released alongside eight other declarations and pledges, Mukhtar Babayev, COP29 President-Designate, and former Azerbaijan Ecology and Natural Resources Minister, said the pledges were a “vital tool” to drive progress on climate action.

He said, “They send strong market signals, help direct financial flows, and foster a sense of shared responsibility. I call on all parties and non-state actors to endorse these documents and help build momentum ahead of COP29.

“While signing these pledges alone will not deliver the changes we need, they play a significant role in supporting the COP29 Presidency’s vision to enhance ambition and enable action.”

Last year’s COP saw hydrogen feature in the climate summit’s Presidential agenda for the first time.

During the event, a declaration of intent on clean hydrogen certification schemes, ISO methodology for hydrogen’s lifecycle assessment, and a public-private action statement were launched.
