COP27: EU, Africa hydrogen collaboration in focus

As the EU looks to import 10 million tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen per year by 2030 to meet its REPowerEU goals, Africa appears set to play a key role.

In a panel discussion during the Hydrogen Transition Summit at COP27, Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, CEO of Hydrogen Europe told delegates that Europe cannot meet its hydrogen and energy goals alone.

“It is important to understand that Europe cannot do it on its own,” said Chatzimarkakis. “We do not have enough space, wind, or sun to produce what is required [by REPowerEU]. Our neighbouring continent, Africa does have the potential.”
